Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Susan!

Time for another Volunteer Spotlight!
This month, we'd like you to meet Susan Ochs.
Like many Common Heart volunteers, Susan wears many hats. The Marvin resident serves as Volunteer Site Coordinator with Common Heart's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, program and is also the Volunteer Coordinator over all aspects at Common Heart. When an individual, family, church or business wants to volunteer at Common Heart, it's Susan they meet.
Susan Ochs
A veteran of the financial industry, Susan's first introduction to Common Heart was helping with the VITA program two years ago after seeing a call for volunteers in a local newspaper. She's now trained and IRS-certified to prepare taxes up to the intermediate level.
"I was kind of at that point where I was looking for some volunteer opportunities to give back. Something more than just writing a check," she said. "I enjoyed it. Everyone that came in ... was very appreciative of what we did. It makes the time you put in feel valuable when people appreciate what you do."
Despite the challenges of raising her two-year-old grandchild, this avid tennis player approached Common Heart Executive Director Keith Adams last year about how she could get more involved year-round. The desire to volunteer beyond tax season led to her new position working with volunteers.
"After the last tax season, I told Susan I wanted to talk with her about a new project. She told me she was wanting to talk with me about doing more with Common Heart," Keith said. "I had been seeing a big need for someone to take up the lead in connecting volunteers with a role they would enjoy. Susan was eager to fill that role. She has been instrumental during the move and expansion connecting business and church groups with our volunteer needs."
