FOOD FOR NEIGHBORS
Local business, school launch food drives
Drop off donations at Curves, Camp Bow Wow, Central Academy   Nancy King has been hosting food drives for years at her Indian Trail Curves location.
But what this small business owner didn't realize until just recently, was that all donations to the Common Cupboard stay in her community. In fact, she didn't know the pantry and parent nonprofit Common Heart even existed until she drove by the new store recently and found the nonprofit on Facebook.
"I love that fact that by donating to the Cupboard, we're keeping the food in our community," Nancy said. "There are so many people that I know that need help. They just need help to get back on their feet a little bit. It's very heart-warming
to know you're giving back to your neighbors. The (members) like to keep it in their community as well - that makes them give more when they know it's staying at home."
Through March 30, Curves is waiving its joining fee for new members who bring in a bag of nonperishable food for the Cupboard or make a $30 donation to the pantry. Members who bring in donations have the chance to win prizes.
Curves is just one of several local businesses hosting food drives for the Cupboard this spring. Anyone can drop off food at Curves, 592 Indian Trail Road in the Union Festival shopping center, Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 7 p.m.
Camp Bow Wow, 8635 Crown Crescent Ct., in Matthews is collecting cat and dog food in its lobby (open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.) and the Beta Club at Central Academy at Lake Park is hosting a food drive for the Cupboard through April 2. Non-perishable goods can be dropped off during regular office hours, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the school, 3624 Lake Park Road.
Ready to host your own food drive? If you register it at TheCommonplace.org we will help you promote it!
